How to create a Venmo QR code

  1. 1

    Add your Venmo username

Type your Venmo username, with or without the @. It’s shown on your Venmo profile.

  2. 2

Set an amount and note (optional)

Add a fixed amount and a note like “Order #1024”, or leave them empty so the payer fills them in.

  3. 3

    Download and test

Scan it from another phone with Venmo and check your name, the amount and the note.

How a Venmo QR code works

Without an amount or note, the code holds your profile link, venmo.com/u/yourname, and opens your Venmo profile ready for payment. With an amount or a note, it holds a payment link like venmo.com/yourname?txn=pay&amount=15&note=…. On a phone with Venmo installed, that opens the payment screen with the amount and note already filled in. The payer checks and confirms.

Personal or business profile?

Venmo has personal profiles for friends and family, and business profiles for selling goods and services. If you’re taking payments from customers, use a business profile: payments are classed correctly, and buyers get purchase protection where it applies. Venmo charges sellers a fee on business payments, so check the current rates.

Fixed amount or open amount?

  • Fixed amount: for set prices, such as a class, a ticket, a product or a monthly club fee. Fewer mistakes, faster checkout.
  • Open amount: for tips, donations and variable orders.

Use the note to label the payment, such as “Yoga class 6 pm” or “Table 4”. It shows up in your Venmo transactions, which makes it easier to match payments to orders.

Where people use Venmo QR codes

  • Farmers’ markets, food trucks and craft fairs
  • Fitness instructors, tutors and coaches, on sign-up sheets and flyers
  • Bands, buskers and creators, for tips at gigs
  • Schools, sports teams and clubs, for fees and fundraisers
  • Roommates and trips, for splitting rent and bills
  • Home services: cleaners, dog walkers and handymen, on invoices

Safety tips

  • Scan your own code before printing and check the username and photo are yours.
  • Check your stand regularly for stickers placed over your code by someone else.
  • Print your @username in text under the code, so payers can confirm they’re paying the right person.
  • Don’t include private information in the note. Venmo notes may be visible to others depending on privacy settings.
  • Venmo is the quickest option for US payers who already use it.
  • PayPal reaches payers in many more countries.
  • A payment link takes cards and wallets on one checkout page, for customers who use neither.

Static and dynamic codes

This is a static code: free and permanent, but fixed once printed. A dynamic QR code lets you change the amount or the note later without reprinting, and counts how many people scanned.

Venmo links are short, so the code scans well at 2 cm. Keep it dark on a light background, and print the amount and your username under the code.

Venmo QR code questions

Doesn’t Venmo have its own QR code?
It does, in the app, for your profile. This code can also fill in an amount and a note, and you can design it and download a print-ready file.
Does Venmo work outside the US?
Venmo is for people in the United States with a US phone number. For international payers, use a PayPal or payment link code.
What if someone scans it on a computer?
The link opens your Venmo profile on the web. The amount and note are filled in when they pay from the Venmo app on a phone.
Is the Venmo QR code free?
Yes. The QR code is free and never expires. Venmo’s own fees for business payments still apply.

Need to change it after printing?
