How to create a phone number QR code

  1. 1

    Enter your number

Type the number in international format, for example +91 98765 43210, so it works for everyone.

  2. 2

    Add a clear label

Use a frame such as “Scan to call” so people know the code will dial a number.

  3. 3

    Download and test

Scan it with your phone. It should show the number and ask before calling.

How a phone number QR code works

The code stores a tel: link with your number. When it’s scanned, the phone shows the number and asks whether to call. It never dials until the person taps Call. It works with the built-in camera on iPhone and Android and needs no internet, because the call uses the normal phone network.

Format the number for everyone

Write the number with a plus sign and the country code: +91 for India, +1 for the US and Canada, +44 for the UK. A number written this way works from any phone, whether the caller is local or travelling. Spaces and dashes are fine, because they’re removed automatically.

Landline numbers need the area code without its leading zero, for example +91 22 1234 5678 for a Mumbai number. Phone extensions aren’t reliably supported in QR codes, so if callers need one, print it next to the code.

Where phone QR codes help

  • Taxi, tuition and repair-service posters, so people call before they walk away
  • Service stickers on air conditioners, water purifiers and appliances for quick support calls
  • Real estate “For sale” and “To let” boards
  • Emergency contact stickers on equipment, helmets, school bags and luggage
  • Delivery packaging and bills for order enquiries
  • Pet tags, so whoever finds your pet can call you straight away

Phone, WhatsApp or SMS?

  • Phone: best when you want a conversation now, such as bookings, emergencies and sales enquiries.
  • WhatsApp: best for customers who prefer messaging, photos and order details. Use a WhatsApp QR code.
  • SMS: best for short keyword replies and opt-ins. Use an SMS QR code.

Many businesses print two codes side by side, “Call” and “WhatsApp”, and let customers choose.

Make sure someone answers

A code that leads to an unanswered phone costs you the customer. If the code is on a sign that people see after hours, set up voicemail with your opening times, or pair the phone code with a WhatsApp code so people can leave a message.

Test before printing

Scan the final file with your own phone and a second phone. Check that the number appears correctly and the call connects, including from a phone on a different network. If the code is for customers in another country, ask someone there to try it, or make sure the country code is right. Then print one sample at the real size and scan it from the distance people will stand.

A phone number makes a small, simple code, so it scans well even at 2 cm. For a sticker on an appliance, 2.5–3 cm is plenty. On a board read from the street, make it 15–20 cm wide. Always print the number itself underneath too, for people who prefer to dial or whose phones can’t scan.

Phone QR code questions

Will scanning the code call automatically?
No. The phone shows the number and waits for the person to tap Call.
Does it work without internet?
Yes. The number is stored in the code, and the call goes over the normal phone network.
Can I use a toll-free or landline number?
Yes. Enter it the way callers should dial it. For numbers that can only be called within your country, such as some toll-free numbers, you can leave out the country code.
What if my number changes?
You would need a new code. If your number might change, a dynamic QR code lets you update it without reprinting.

Need to change it after printing?

Dynamic QR codes let you update the destination any time and see how many people scan. 3 free with an account.
