How to create a Discord QR code
- 1
Create a lasting invite
In Discord, choose Invite People, then edit the invite link so it never expires and has no use limit.
- 2
Paste and design
Paste the invite link or code, then add your server icon, colours and a frame such as “Join our Discord”.
- 3
Download and test
Scan it from a phone that isn’t in the server yet and check the invite opens.
How a Discord QR code works
The code holds your server invite, such as discord.gg/yourserver. When someone scans it, Discord opens the invite with your server’s name, icon and member count, and a Join button. If Discord isn’t installed, the invite opens in the browser.
Paste a full invite link, a discord.com/invite/… link, or just the invite code, and we build the link.
Make an invite that won’t expire
This is the most important step. By default, Discord invites expire after 7 days, and some are limited to a number of uses. A printed code with an expired invite shows “Invite invalid”, and there’s no way to fix a static code after printing.
When you create the invite, choose Edit invite link and set:
- Expire after: Never
- Max number of uses: No limit
If your server has a vanity URL (discord.gg/yourname), use that instead. Vanity links don’t expire and are easy to read under the code.
Where communities use Discord QR codes
- Game stores, esports events and LAN parties
- Stream overlays and “starting soon” screens, so viewers can join from their phone
- Conference booths and hackathons, for the event’s community server
- School, college and university clubs, on posters and freshers’ fair stands
- Product packaging for brands that run support or beta programmes on Discord
- Tabletop, anime and hobby shops, for local community servers
Welcome people who scan
Most new members arrive, look around for a few seconds and decide whether to stay. Make those seconds count:
- Set up a welcome channel with a short “start here” message and your rules.
- Use onboarding questions, so new members only see the channels they care about.
- Give the invite a landing channel that fits the print, for example
#event-chatfor a conference code. - Keep verification simple. Every extra step loses people who joined from a poster.
Safety tips
Anyone with the code can join. For public posters, set a sensible verification level, keep moderators active, and give new members limited permissions until they’ve been around for a while.
Static and dynamic codes
This is a static code: the invite link is stored in the pattern, free and permanent, but it can’t be changed. A dynamic QR code stores a short link instead, so if an invite is revoked or you move to a new server, you can update the destination without reprinting, and see how many people scanned.
Print tips
Invite links are short, so the code scans well at 2 cm. On stream overlays, make it at least a sixth of the screen height and leave it up long enough for viewers to reach for their phones. Keep the code dark on a light background, and use Discord’s blurple in the frame.
